Ergenekon Case Exposes Links to Denial Websites

ANKARA (Combined Sources)— The Turkish daily newspaper Today’s Zaman on Feb. 5 revealed that the clandestine ultra-nationalist group Ergenekon, which was charged with attempting to overthrow the government, is also responsible for operating a series of websites promoting nationalist propaganda and pseudo-scientific research denying the Armenian Genocide.

The websites are updated frequently in both Turkish and English and feature content against Greeks, Kurds, and Armenians, as well as Turkey’s own Muslim segments, Zaman reported. The websites have been online for some time and are characterized by Zaman as having “professional-looking content and design.” But these sites, rich with information, videos, photographs, and documents offer no contact information.

The investigation into the activities of Ergenekon has revealed that a hub of retired and on-duty military personnel are behind the network of dozens of ultra-nationalist websites, and that 35 internet domains with similar content and design were registered with the same company.

The websites attempted to foment public opinion in line with the goals of the Ergenekon organization. They included www.abdullahocalanakademisi.info, www.apopkk.com, armenianreality.com, www.cameria.org, www.gencizbiz.net, genclik.info, gnkur.net, greekmurderers.net, www.irtica.net, www.irtica.org, www.naksilik.com, www.nursi.info, www.pkkapo.com, www.pkkgercegi.com, www.terorveguvenlik.net, www.turkatak.com and www.turkeyturks.com.
Despite the discovery, many of the sites are still active and frequently updated. In addition to denying the genocide, they commonly refer to Armenians as “terrorists,” as in the case of anti-Greek and anti-Kurdish websites operated by Ergenekon.

Most noteworthy, however, is the fate of other nationalist websites that relied heavily on Ergenekon’s internet content for their substance. One such website is Murad “Holdwater” Gumen’s www.tallarmeniantale.com. Last Summer, the Southern Poverty Law Center, a U.S.-based Civil Rights organization, exposed that website, along with www.armenianreality.com and two other sites operated by Ergenekon members.
