Armenia’s Angels in the Uniting Church of Australia

By Rev. Dr. Krikor Youmshajekian Members of the Australian Armenian Community, civic and religious leaders all came together at St. Stephen’s Uniting Church in Sydney on Sept. 13, to pay tribute to the Australian humanitarians who provided vital support to survivors of the Armenian Genocide.  The event was both a book launch and an emotional acknowledgement of the lifesaving work of the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) predecessor church members. 1. Thank you Rev Krikor Youmshajekian for writing a great piece on such a significant event. The following are some excerpts from reviews of the book ‘Armenia, Australia and the Great War’:

A “highly researched volume … with irrefutable proof of the Armenian genocide.” – Robert Fisk, The Independent

A “moving history” which “explores how the persecution of the Armenians intersected with Australia’s emerging sense of nationhood.” – Fiona Capp, Sydney Morning Herald

“It tells an unknown and powerful story with flair, clarity, and engagement, and introduces a fascinating new narrative in Australia’s involvement in World War 1.” – Professor Joy Damousi, Australian Book Review

“This book is a great contribution to the history of the Armenian diaspora, but perhaps more importantly, it is also a great contribution to a little known chapter of Australian history.” – Ashley Kalagian Blunt, Newtown Review of Books

“A tragic tale, with echoes in today’s Middle East Maelstrom.” – David Cusworth, Weekend West Magazine

“The book is all the more remarkable in its ability to present one of the most complex conflicts of the twentieth century with great clarity … Babkenian and Stanley’s book is informative, innovative and a pulsating read all the way through.” – Dr Romain Fathi, Australian Journal of History and Politics

“Sadly the Turkish government continues to deny that the Armenian genocide ever happened. It is for this reason that this book is so important” – Peter Masters, Australian Defence Magazine
