Obituary: Gilbert C. Markarian, 82

WORCESTER, Mass.—Gilbert C. Markarian, Sr., 82, passed away Sun., Sept. 26 after a recent rapid decline in health. He leaves his beloved wife of 62 years, Florence (Haroutian) Markarian; a daughter, Donna Mooradian, and her husband Arthur of Worcester; a son, Gil Jr., and his wife Mary Ann; and his grandchildren, Matthew and Elizabeth, all of Houston, Texas. He leaves his brother, Sarkis Markarian, Jr. of Worcester, and his sister-in-law, Gladys Markarian of Worcester. “Uncle Gil” also leaves several cousins, nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Gil’s brother, “Eddy” Markarian, predeceased him.

Gil was born in Worcester, the son of Sarkis and Mary (Gananian) Markarian, and graduated from South High School and Worcester Junior College. He worked at the Wayland Lab and retired as an engineering unit man from the Raytheon Company before relocating to Cape Cod.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church and was formerly a Board of Trustee and Men’s Club member. He was also a member of both the Yarmouth and Dennis Senior Centers. Gil enjoyed playing championship bridge. He was a devoted husband, cherished father, and loving grandpa who always delighted in spending time with his family, especially at the beach. He took his children to Sunday School every week. In the summer, he took them to the beach on family vacations to Nantasket Beach and Atlantic City. He made sure they were able to attend Camp Haiastan every season, and supported all their dreams and endeavors. He will be sorely missed by all who knew his kind, compassionate ways.

Gil’s funeral service was held on Sat., Oct. 1 at the Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church in Worcester. Interment was in Hope Cemetery, in Worcester. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to the Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church, 635 Grove St., Worcester, MA 01606.
