Azeri Sniper Kills Armenian Soldier

In an Oct. 15 press release, Armenia’s Defense Ministry (DM) stated that according to the Karabagh Defense Army, on Oct. 14, around 7 p.m., an Azerbaijani sniper claimed the life of 22-year-old conscript Vitali Igityan’s life.

Armenia’s DM condemned the sniper attack, saying that “Such actions from the Azerbaijani side, just after the monitoring held by the OSCE MG [Minsk Group] co-chairs, show that Azerbaijan not only despises the urges of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to remove the snipers, but also ignores the concerns of the OSCE acting president and the OSCE MG co-presidents regarding the former casualties of the snipers, trying to fail the efforts of the international community for a peaceful settlement of the NK conflict.”

Armenia’s DM added that “Relevant military actions will be undertaken to neutralize the actions of the Azerbaijani snipers in the Armenian-Azerbaijani contact line.”

Meanwhile, Azerbaijani news sources quoted a spokesman for Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry as saying, “To neutralize our snipers, one should be very powerful. As we know, Armenia has not this power. It does not have a power capable of neutralizing the Azerbaijani snipers.” The statement also dismissed the Armenian DM’s statement, calling it “idle talk,” and suggesting Igityan died at the hands of fellow Armenian conscripts.

The border between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been plagued with occasional skirmishes. The Armenian side supports sniper withdrawal from its border, while Azerbaijan rejects is.

In a Sept. 27 press release, Armenia’s DM stated that “The Armenian side has proposed, on numerous occasions, to withdraw snipers from the line of contact, realizing that it would in effect ease tensions, as well as decrease the number of casualties. Let us note that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs have proposed the same.”

  1. How many must die before any action is taken. Armenia is 3 million whilst Azerbaidjan is 9 million. To maintain the balance, for every Armenian soldier killed 3 of theirs must die and if you want to add a punitive disincentive then double it to 6. It is time the Armenian Government gives a decisive response.

Such a shame! How can you say such facist things? Is this only your response or the general thought in Armenia? I’m shocked.

  3. Ugur — You give Armenians a shame?! Unheard of! A representative of a nation that slaughtered, mutilated, raped, burnt and buried alive, stabbed and starved to death millions of Christians, including 1.5 million Armenians, gives us a shame! A representative of a fascist state that denies genocide of Armenians for 95 years, distorts historical truth, spends millions of dollars worlfwode to hide the truth, tries, deports, and kills anyone who speaks the truth about Turkish barbarity against native Christian peoples of Asia Minor, gives us a shame! You’re not shocked at the behavior of your nation as a whole and are shocked at a rightful indignation of an individual Armenian here? Unbelievable!

To Armenians, be strong don’t give in to terrorists (Azerbajan state), never give up Arthzak or the sorounding areas, and if war starts again, annex Nakhidjevan as soon as possible. I will join you in your struggle, its not much only one person, but everything helps :)
