  1. My grandmother, Arpine Terlemezian, used to tell us stories about Armenian children from Boston who would come to Grandma and Grandpa’s (Dajad’s) farm in New Hampshire. One year it was 3-year old Lucy and her older brother. Two things stood out about that story. First, Grandma, after spending some time with the 3-year old, declared “Some day this girl is going to be SOMEBODY.” The other part of the story was about how Lucy’s older brother contracted poison ivy and how she treated it. That older brother was Haig. I had never heard the name before, but when I did that day, it started to reverberate in my head. One perfect syllable. It was then I promised my 6-year old self that one day I would have a son and I would name him Haig. If I’m not mistaken Haig Der Manuelian became the youngest person to pass the Bar in Massachusetts.

I had the good fortune of hearing Lucy lecture several times. When my mom shared Grandma’s prediction with her, Lucy flashed her megawatt smile. I Was also lucky enough to hear Haig speak once or twice. Rest In Peace dear, extraordinary Der Manuelian sister and brother.
