Truth versus National Interest: Billboard Thanking Germany Goes Up in Massachusetts

Peace of Art, Inc., (www.peaceofart.org) is displaying a large-scale electronic billboard in Foxboro, Mass., thanking Germany for recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

Titled “Truth Vs. National Interest,” this billboard illustrates, on the left side, the German flag and, on the opposite side, the dome of the U.S. Capitol building, where the United States Senate and House of Representatives come together to debate and discuss national and political issues.

Peace of Art president Daniel Varoujan Hejinian stated that “with this billboard, we express gratitude on behalf of our organization for Germany’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide; simultaneously, we are  calling on the United States to follow Germany’s act of courage, and set aside its commercial interest for the sake of the truth.”

During World War I, Imperialist Germany was an ally of the Ottoman Empire and had its share of guilt in the implementation of the Armenian Genocide, by justifying and encouraging the crime against humanity.  In 1918, Hans von Wangenheim, the German ambassador in Constantinople, said in an interview with an American journalist, “I do not blame the Turks for what they are doing to the Armenians… They are entirely justified.”  It has been argued that this justification was the motivation for Hitler to organize the mass extermination of Jews during World War II.

The recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Germany this month was the answer to a question asked 75 years ago by Adolf Hitler: “Who today remembers the annihilation of the Armenians?”

  1. Why would you insert a photo of the the U.S. Capitol on the billboard instead of the German Bundestag? Germany ought to get all the credit!

  2. How wise it is to call the German recognition of the Armenian genocide being against their national interest, I don’t know. I would argue that it is not. Erdogan has proven to be a master extortionist. He has allowed the smuggling of Syrian refugees and making it painful for the west. The smuggling was not for free. Most of the refugees paid exorbitant price and left a small fortune in Turkey. Humanitarianism has never been Turkish policy. Germany agreed to pay Turkey $5B and path to entering the EU to control the flow of refugees. The flow stopped proving that the smuggling was approved by the state. Merkel was probably quite upset when Erdogan asked for and got the extradition of a German entertainer for offending a foreign head of state, using an obscure German law that had never been used before. I hope she has learned a lesson. Still, it takes a great deal of courage and honesty to allow passing of the resolution in the Bundestag in view of the sizable Turkish minority in Germany. Thank you Germany!
Erdogan’s comment that the blood of the German MP of Turkish origin should be tested (to determine if he has Turkish blood) is funny and stupid. The original Turks were a yellow race and no Turk in Turkey shows any signs of that. He should submit his blood to genetic testing and publish the results. I would bet that he is 90%+ Greek or Armenian, or some other tribe that was part of the Ottoman Empire. The Turks are Turks not because of genes, but because they believe they are.
