Round 10: Armenia Chess Team Defeats Czech Republic

KHANTY MANSIYSK, Russia (A.W.)—In Round 10 of the 2010 Chess Olympiad, Armenia beat the Czech Republic (2.5-1.5) following a victory by Levon Aronian. The other three games of the Armenia-Czech Republic match ended in a draw.

In turn, Ukraine smashed France (3.5-0.5), further consolidating its position at the top of the scoreboard. Armenia cannot catch up with it even if it wins its match on the 11th and final round. Russia and Israel beat China and the U.S., respectively. Russia still has a chance of catching up with Ukraine in the final round.

In the women’s section, Armenia lost to Poland (3-1). The Armenian women have no chance of a medal.

Around 1,300 chess players from 124 countries are participating in the Olympiad.

The Armenian team won the Chess Olympiad in 2006 in Turin, Italy and in 2008 in Dresden, Germany. It took third place in 2002 and 2004 at Olympiads in Bled, Slovenia and in Calvia, Spain respectively. Armenia hosted the Chess Olympiad in 1996 in Yerevan.
