Turkish Group Pressures Google to Become Complicit in Genocide Denial

Launches Online Campaign to Reinstate Google Ads Misinformation Campaign

WASHINGTON—On Aug. 11, the Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) launched an online campaign to pressure internet giant Google into complicity in its denial of the Armenian Genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

The move comes in response to Google’s recent decision to stand by its “Don’t be Evil” motto by stopping advertisements, placed by the TCA, which drove internet traffic to websites denying the Armenian Genocide. The TCA’s earlier Google Ads were triggered with search entries including “Armenia,” “Armenian,” and “Armenian Genocide,” and led to the Turkish Coalition of America website—which includes revisionist materials denying the centrally planned and systematically carried-out campaign of extermination of the 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Turkish government from 1915-23. The TCA also advocates against passage of Congressional legislation, H.Res.252, recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

“The Turkish Coalition of America’s efforts to strong-arm Google to join their Armenian Genocide denial campaign is as misguided as their broader efforts to cover-up this crime against humanity,” said ANCA executive director Aram Hamparian. “We commend Google for reviewing its ad policy and respecting its ‘Don’t be Evil’ motto by turning down ads advocating hate and lies.”

Google reviewed its policy on running Armenian Genocide denial ads in June 2009, after receiving thousands of letters from concerned Armenian Americans and human rights activists expressing outrage at the ads. An ANCA Action Alert distributed on May 28 explained that “These ads are misleading to Google patrons, profoundly offensive to victims and survivors of all genocides, and contribute to an environment of outright denial and impunity in the face of mass atrocities that continues to fuel the cycle of genocide to this very day.” A Facebook Causes page, titled “Stop Turkey’s Anti-Armenian Genocide Propaganda on Google AdWords!” has over 9,100 members.

The ANCA has posted an alert urging activists to contact Google in support of their policy against genocide denial. To take action, visit http://www.capwiz.com/anca/issues/alert/?alertid=13868481&type=CU.

  1. To all Armenians, as well as ANCA,
Please take a look at Karabagh on Google map, there are no sign of it, while the map that shows Armenia and Azerbeijan is the old Soviet Stalinist map. We, Armenians, should get together and complain Google to update their map, to show the real and current political map of the region.

  2. Struggle against http://www.google.com is something like self-destruction for the Turkish Soul. For Turks and Turkish Spirit, a mere discussion on Young Turks’ terrorist policies of the beginning of the 20th century (something Turkish governmental agencies were doing in the 1920s) can enable Turks to get out of their inferiority complex.

Unless Artsakh becomes universally recognised as an independent state it will not be shown in any maps as separate entity.  I believe we have to concentrate on getting Artsakh through this difficult time. It is imperative that it stays in Armenian hands. If it is given back to the Azeris…it will be the final blow for our collective national pride and confidence

  4. Also look up ‘Armenian genocide’ in any public library catalog and a message will pop up saying we refer to it as the Armenian Massacres or something to that effect..I personally contacted the head of listings at the Library of Congress and they said as long as the US doesn’t recognize it as a genocide then they will not refer to it as genocide.. What sheer nonsense. What does pure academics truths have anything to do with politics? We need to go after the Library of Congress as well..

Just remember: Our real enemy of truth and justice is the US STATE DEPARTMENT.. Always has been.

    • For us Armenian Americans John is right to say that ‘Our real enemy of truth and justice is the US STATE DEPARTMENT’. Note that Hillary doesn’t understand why there is so much passion about what happened in 1915. Note that there are increasing number of American VIPs that take Turkish and Azeri money to represent those countries interests and deny the Armenian Genocide. Note that the Obama administration has further deepened ties and the dependence of its Middle East strategy on Turkey; this is not good for Armenia. Note that the Obama administration is OPENLY supporting and enabling the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafi to power in multiple countries, bringing increasing suffering ahead for all Christians in the Middle East (as if it wasn’t bad enough) and sharia that is turning back what remained of the liberation of Muslim women (another story ignored by the West). Difficult times are ahead.

  5. To Samvel Jeshmaridian, Ph.D:

AGREED! Dr. Jeshmaridian, let us then have an open public forum “discussion”, with full media coverage regarding this topic! Will you then convince ANCA and the ARF/AYF to also agree (we’ve been requesting such a “discussion” for over a decade!), and thus coordinate with ATAA to set this up? The whole world needs to know both sides of this story, once and for all! Please contact us on any of the Turkish Forum sites, or even back here at AW, if you are indeed serious or just pulling our collective “chains”. Looking forward to your positive response.

    • Robert, Google Rafael Lemkin and the word genocide..The actual word was invented as a result of what the Turks did to the Armenians.

Also, In 2005 both Turks and Armenians asked the (ICTJ), International Center for Transitional Justice, to conclude on the events of 1915. They unanimously came back and deemed the events to conform to all definitions of the term genocide. And further concluded that it should be called as such..The Turkish side quickly ignored the ruling and just continued the nonsense of ” further historical debate”. Dude none doubts it other then you Turks and a handful of paid mercenary scholars..Your side is nonsense and only tries to avoid the truth..

Our own US archives are filled with thousands of real time telegrams from our US State department describing the planned “Armenian Race extermination”..these aren’t made up by any Tashnak or the ANCA..

Last 1.5 million Pontiff Greeks and Assyrians were also liquidated in the same planned mass murder as the Armenians.. Then came the Kurds later on..But I’m sure there is another Turkish side of those stories as well?

  6. Obama, Joe Biden and Clinton as Senators promised if
elected as President they will recognize the Armenian Genocide.
Unfortunately, they ignored their promise and flip flopped from Genocide to massacre. How easy is to switch from positive to negative and bias Turks.
