Sarkisian Meets with Aliyev, Diplomats Talk about ‘Progress’

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (A.W.)—On May 7, Armenia’s President Serge Sarkisian met with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence in Prague. The meeting was held on the eve of the EU’s Eastern Partnership summit.

The two discussed the Nagorno-Karabagh issue and, according to the Minsk Group of international mediators and other diplomats, “progress was registered.”

Talking about the meeting at a press conference, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary Matthew Bryza, who is also the co-chair of the Minsk Group, said that Armenia and Azerbaijan reduced their differences and that, for the first time, they “generally agree on the basic ideas they came here to discuss.” Bryza did not, however, provide any details about the “basic ideas” he was referring to.

The French co-chair of the group, Bernard Fassier, said in turn that Armenia and Azerbaijan are going to “finalize the details” with foreign ministers ahead of the next meeting, which will be held in St. Petersburg early next month.

The Armenian and Azerbaijani sides were not represented at the press conference.
