“I was honored to meet with President Sarkisian and discuss ways that we can strengthen the relationship between our two countries and better support Rhode Island’s thriving Armenian community,” said Cicilline, who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

A strong advocate for the Armenian-American community, Cicilline has urged the Obama Administration to recognize the Armenian Genocide and has worked to pursue a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabagh conflict.

Representative Katherine Clark also welcomed Sarkisian on Sept. 30, at a luncheon at the U.S. Capitol hosted by the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation. The event was held to honor the late Ambassador Henry Morgenthau for his efforts to stop the Armenian Genocide and to recognize Sarkisian for Armenia’s leadership in providing a safe haven for thousands of refugees from Syria.

Clark represents the second largest Armenian-American community in the United States with Massachusetts cities and towns that include Watertown, Waltham, Belmont, Lexington, Arlington, Cambridge, Framingham, Lincoln, Winchester, and Woburn.

One of Clark’s first official acts in Congress was to join the Congressional Armenian Caucus to help raise awareness of issues facing both Armenian Americans and Armenians across the globe. She has been a strong voice on Armenian issues, advocating for genocide recognition and most recently for lasting peace in Nagorno-Karabagh in the face of renewed attacks and aggression from Azerbaijan. Clark and several of her colleagues urged James Warlick, the U.S. co-chair of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group, to take steps to deescalate the violence in the Nagorno-Karabagh region.
