Listed as a transit camp in a September 1915 guideline organizing the re-deportation process of Armenians arriving in Syria, Meskeneh had operated as such from the onset of the deportations, but its importance grew with the closing of camps around Aleppo city in late 1915 and early 1916.

Dr. Khatchig Mouradian

Khatchig Mouradian is the Armenian and Georgian Area Specialist at the Library of Congress and a lecturer in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University. He also serves as Co-Principal Investigator of the project on Armenian Genocide Denial at the Global Institute for Advanced Studies, New York University. Mouradian is the author of The Resistance Network: The Armenian Genocide and Humanitarianism in Ottoman Syria, 1915-1918, published in 2021. The book has received the Syrian Studies Association “Honourable Mention 2021.” In 2020, Mouradian was awarded a Humanities War & Peace Initiative Grant from Columbia University. He is the co-editor of a forthcoming book on late-Ottoman history, and the editor of the peer-reviewed journal The Armenian Review.

  2. Thank you Mr. Mouradian for that well documented article. My father from Gesaria on his way to Deir el-Zor stayed in Meskeneh, where his youngest brother Aramig died. They buried him there. Now that part of Meskeneh is submerged under the dammed waters of the Euphrates. I recently published my father’s memoir in “Leaving Kayseri, A Journey of One Hundred Years”.

  3. The translation of this book “Ayn Sev Orerun” into Turkish is hugely important, up there with, “My Grandmother” by Fethiye Cetin. What’s needed now is for the school curriculum in Turkey to change. One hundred years of brainwashing the young is way too long. An example: My friend, Dikran’s girl cousin is sitting in a classroom in Turkey, circa 1950s. The teacher is telling the students about the horrible Armenians and how they murdered innocent Turkish people in 1915. All students in unison turn and stare at his cousin. Example 2: Thirty years ago I taught history classes about the Genocide at Sunshine Continuation High School in San Francisco. One of my students quite passionately exclaimed: “Why didn’t we know about the Armenians before this?” I couldn’t answer him. Turkish students will also be dumbfounded when they are taught the truth about the Genocide. They’ll get over their initial shock and hopefully want to learn more.

  4. A memory from Ankara. When i was a student in a high school in Ankara, 1983. Our history teacher said that, ‘i dont want to teach theese lies, they killed the Armenians, ok lets see the what is next chapter’ and we turned the leaves of the history books , next chapter…
    When i think this memory now, it is amazing but it happened i was there.
