Images from the Armenian Quarter of Old Jerusalem are featured in the 2025 wall calendar recently published by Stone Garden Press.
The photographs are from the portfolio of Matthew Karanian, the author-photographer of The Armenian Highland, an award-winning history book about Western Armenia and the First Armenian Republic of 1918.
Karanian’s photographs of the Armenian Quarter show the history of the Armenians of Jerusalem, which dates back nearly two millennia. His photographs were created with the cooperation and support of the Armenian Church, which gave him unfettered access to the historic Armenian sites of the Holy City and Bethlehem.
“The Armenian Quarter is one of the most Armenian places in the world, outside of Armenia itself,” said Karanian. His photographic subjects include the Cathedral of St. James, the Tomb of St. Mary, the Church of the Holy Archangels and many other sites throughout the Armenian Quarter, as well as Armenian sites in the region that are outside the Quarter.
The Armenian Church controls, either in whole or in part, every major Christian site in the region, including the birthplace of Jesus in Bethlehem and the site of the crucifixion, now the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
“Our history there is magnificent,” says Karanian. “And the control by the Armenian Church of so many holy sites is quite remarkable.” The Armenian Quarter is one of four quarters in the old city of Jerusalem, and it is the only quarter named for a nation. The other quarters are Christian, Jewish and Muslim.
Despite Armenia’s proud history in Jerusalem, Karanian says the continued Armenian presence in the Armenian Quarter is at risk because of geopolitical issues and because of discriminatory and unfavorable treatment from government authorities.
“My photography is an attempt to create greater awareness of our history and to shine a light on the challenges that we Armenians face in preserving our status there,” he added.
