It is sad to think that there are so many brilliant Armenian women we will never know about. So many have been left out of our male-dominated history. For instance, I’m sure Armenian women were active and creating art during the time period covered in the Armenia! exhibit currently on display at The Met, but in spite of this, the exhibit features not a single female artist. Parev, my name is Shoghig Tavitian from Providence RI, 2016 I was at Singapore, we did visit to the Armenian St. Gregory Illuminator Church where Agnes Joaquim toump stone was there, we had to pray on all of them. I would like to share some pictures with you. Thanks for your research, her and others for sure they deserve to be honored and remembered. Vartzget Gadar.

What a beautiful tribute! However I should comment that in 2000 I wrote an article arguing that Agnes should be given credit for her achievement. I was roundly criticised for claiming that. In 2008 Harold Johnson and I wrote ‘Vanda Miss Joaquim: Singapore’s National Flower & the Legacy of Agnes & Ridley’ in an attempt to publicise the true story.
By the way, Agnes did not hybridise the orchid in 1893- it was earlier and she is not buried in the Church grounds.
Thank you for all your hard work n getting out the truth about her. The book you co-authored is an nvaluable reference. Do you know anyone who can correct Wikipedia that shamefully gves misinformation saying she discovered the flower?
