YEREVAN (A.W.)—Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan is expected to resign on Sept. 8, according to a source close to the government, reported Reuters.
According to the source, the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) would discuss Abrahamyan’s resignation on Sept. 8. “There are all indications that this decision will be announced tomorrow,” the source told Reuters on Sept. 7.
An economic slowdown this year and outbreaks of violence prompted Armenia’s President Serge Sarkisian to call for a “government of national accord” in August.
A spokesman for President Sarkisian declined to comment, though local media said that the decision would likely be announced at the Sept. 8 RPA executive council session. Abrahamyan was appointed prime minister in 2014.
On Sept. 7, local media outlets began reporting that Abrahamyan would be replaced by technocrat Karen Karapetyan. The 53-year-old Karapetyan is the former head of the national gas distributing company ArmRosGazprom and served as Yerevan’s mayor from Dec. 2010 to Nov. 2011.
