All-Armenian Youth Chess Olympiad Begins in Yerevan

YEREVAN (A.W.)—On Aug. 14, President Serge Sarkisian attended the official opening ceremony of the first All-Armenian Youth Chess Olympiad, which is being held in Yerevan from Aug. 15-23.

Seven teams from the diaspora, two teams from Armenia, and a team from Artsakh are taking part in the Olympiad. The number of participating chess players is over 40.

The Olympiad aims at strengthening ties between the youth in Armenia and the diaspora, as well as enhancing and continuing Armenia’s chess tradition.

During a press conference on Aug. 12, Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan said, “This Olympiad is of great moral, political, and historical significance, as Armenian chess players from 12 countries will compete with each other with the awareness of being in the Homeland.”
