Keghi Compatriotic Unions-1934

With their villages and inhabitants decimated by the Turkish government, the scant survivors of the 1915-23 Armenian Genocide moved forward to establish compatriotic unions in the United States in an effort to maintain their noble Armenian identity.

The following list was created from material recently discovered by area resident Asbed Papakhian among his father’s—Arch Priest Souren Papakhian—numerous books and papers. Asbed translated the Armenian into English, thereby bestowing upon us a treasure of a gift.

  1. Dear Betty:
I read your article on the Keghi compatriotic associations with great interest. One correction: Shoushanig Papakhian, Der Souren’s wife, was from the Armenian village of Bitias in Musa Dagh, not from Latakia. Her maiden name was Chaparian. Der Souren was a teacher at Bitias, that’s where they met and fell in love. After getting married, the couple moved to Latakia.
    Sincerely,
    Vahram Shemmassian

  2. Dear Betty:

Excellent article. In my youth in Marseille, I remember a very active Keghi association. My Grandfather: Karekine Tourikian & my father Parène Tourikian were very active in the community. I would love to hear from others who may have contact to the Marseille community. I am trying to pick up the thread.

I have a photograph, taken in 1947, of the members of the community. Should you be interested, I would be glad to forward to you.

    Warmest regards,

    Jean-Louis

  3. Sireli Jean-Louis,
I would appreciate any photo or information you have. Thank you for being a fan of my column. I have an acquaintance in Hamilton, Ontario with whom I will get in touch. He is from Marseilles in the 75 year old range and seems to be collecting information on Keghi too. He does the Armenian Radio Program there. I will send him a copy of your message.

  4. Sireli Vahram,
It is so nice of you to take the time to comment and I appreciate your reading my column. Therefore I got in touch with Asbed Papakhian the son of Der Souren and Yeretzgeen Papakhian who stated to me he their first born was born in Latakia. His mother Shoushanig was born in Hama a stone’s throw from Latakia when her mother was there as a refugee, Further Asbed states, “Like all Armenian histories in that era things were complicated. She lived in Bitias their village until she married Sourn.”
Again thank you for bringing this to my attention and Asbed’s clarification.

  5. It is also to be noted that 5 out of the 6 Armenians who were on board the Titanic were from Keghi.

  6. I am very interested in finding any Ohanian relatives from Keghi. My mothers family was completed massacared in 1915. They spared her at 7 years of age and her 4 year old brother. Siraoush & Gegham Ohanian. They were eventually found by thier grandfather after the war. My mother always told us I will tell you the story someday. That day never came and she passed away in Tehran Iran in 1965.

  7. Hello, where can I find more information on the Keghi Compatriotic Unions? Very interested in learning more. Are any still operating today? Thank you.
