Ned Apigian of Dearborn Heights, Mich. won a seat on that city’s City Council during the Nov. 2010 elections. Apigian also came in first in the Aug. 3 primary election in a field of three, qualifying for the November general election cycle.
On Nov. 2, Apigian garnered 6,419 votes, whereas runner-up Kathy Abdel Hak received 5,303 votes. Because the open seat was an appointed seat, which was vacated on Election Day, Apigian assumed office theoretically on Nov. 3, to complete the unexpired term of the open seat until Dec. 31, 2011.
Therefore, Apigian’s seat along with two others of the seven total Council seats will have to be competed for again in 2011, for three four-year terms. If there are less than six total candidates, there will not be a primary election in August; if there are more than six candidates, then there will be a primary election and the top six will move on to the general election in November 2011, to determine the three winners.
Apigian, a former AYFer, is an active member of the Detroit Armenian community. He is currently a member of the Detroit ARF “Azadamard” Gomideh; the Board of Directors of the Armenian Community Center of Greater Detroit; and the Board of Directors of the Armenian Senior Citizens Tower of Greater Detroit, a 150-unit apartment complex. He is also the chairman of the ANC of Michigan and a major supporter of Hairenik publications, having served as the national chairman of the 100th anniversary of the Hairenik Press in 2000.
