Canada: Prelacy Names Kaprielian-Churchill ‘Person of the Year’

On May 22, at the annual Prelacy conference in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Hagopian honored Dr. Isabel Kaprielian-Churchill with the Person of the Year Award for her contributions to the Armenian community in Canada.

Archbishop Hagopian presented Kaprielian with a copy of the 13th-century Gospel of Partserpert, prepared in 1248 in Hromkla, Cilicia. The gospel is one of the most magnificent surviving masterpieces of Armenian art and spirituality. It was miraculously saved by Catholicos Sahag II during the Armenian Genocide and is now in the Catholicosate Museum in Antelias, Lebanon. The reproduction was commissioned by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I and is published by the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia.

In introducing Kaprielian, Nairi Shahinian pointed out that she is Professor Emerita of the Department of History at California State University, Fresno, where she is a professor of Armenian and immigration history. Kaprielian is the author of many articles and books, including Like Our Mountains: a History of Armenians in Canada, which covers the first 100 years of Armenian settlement in Canada. Like Our Mountains was awarded the Clio Prize by the Canadian Historical Association in 2006 for the most outstanding book on Ontario history.

Kaprielian is very active in the Armenian-Canadian community. She was a member of the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) and recently received a pin for 35 years of service in the Armenian Relief Society (ARS).

  1. Hello
I would like to ask Dr. Kaprielian-Churchill if I could talk to her about my Grandmother, Armenouhi Simigian, Hamilton, Ontario. She interviewed her in 1977-78 and I am curious about what they talked about.
I am not able to find any contact information if she would allow you to pass it along that would be great.
    Thank you
    Sandi
