TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (A.W.)—On April 7, the St. Philippos Uzbekistan Armenian Church celebrated the Annunciation of Our Lady St. Mary. The community did not celebrate Easter a week earlier, as the church was undergoing renovation. Hence, the April 7 event constituted a double celebration. Photographs are below.

As Uzbekistan’s (post) Soviet education system and institutions are gradually supplanted by ones from Turkey (of either the Kemalist or pan-Turkist variety), this community will be put in a very precarious situation.
The same is true for Armenian communities in the other Central Asian republics as well as Tatarstan and Bashkortostan within the Russian Federation.
