Armenian Church in Uzbekistan Celebrates Annunciation, Easter (Photos)

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (A.W.)—On April 7, the St. Philippos Uzbekistan Armenian Church celebrated the Annunciation of Our Lady St. Mary. The community did not celebrate Easter a week earlier, as the church was undergoing renovation. Hence, the April 7 event constituted a double celebration. Photographs are below.

  1. Thank you to Georgiy Saakov for keeping us informed about our compatriots in Uzbekistan. At one time, the police chief of Tashkent was an Armenian, if I remember. Keep up the good work, Georgiy. Apres!

  2. As Uzbekistan’s (post) Soviet education system and institutions are gradually supplanted by ones from Turkey (of either the Kemalist or pan-Turkist variety), this community will be put in a very precarious situation.

The same is true for Armenian communities in the other Central Asian republics as well as Tatarstan and Bashkortostan within the Russian Federation.
