We speak Armenian to babies after four generations in the diaspora

We speak Armenian to babies
Whatever we remember –
Even if it’s
Tatig, dodig
Even if it’s
Gatig, porig
Or an old song
We don’t understand
Murmured from memory
Tumbling out of our mouths
Into tender ears
The words echoing back
To comfort us.
