AYF Olympics: Be Prepared, Be Safe

By Sylvia Varadian, CRT and Sandra Megerdichian, RN

As co-chair of the Medical Committee for the 76th Annual AYF-YOARF Olympic Games, I would like our AYF alumni, members, family, and friends to be safe and aware of their surroundings while in Providence. If everyone follows a few simple steps, the weekend can be enjoyable for everyone.

Here is a list of things to pack for the weekend:

Hats and sunscreen for adults and children to protect them from the sun at the outdoor events.

Water bottles and juice/sports drinks to keep properly hydrated when out in the sun.

Lunch-size snacks for diabetic patients to keep in backpacks or purses.

Bring inhalers with you at all times, all prescription medications you are currently taking, along with a list of medications on a card. Also, be sure to remember to wear medical alert bracelets.

Dress in light layers to be prepared for cool mornings and warm afternoons.

Bring extra comfortable shoes for the field events.

Bring a travel umbrella for the unexpected New England weather to protect from the rain or sun. As a matter of fact, pick up a plastic rain poncho at the dollar store just in case.

Parents, keep a close eye on small children, especially at the events, to stay off the track and field so no accidents occur. Children should not be running with anything in their mouths.

The Medical Committee personnel will have staff shirts and hats on if you need immediate assistance. We have assembled a team of medical professionals (doctors, dentists, nurses, and trainers) who will be volunteering their time over the course of the weekend.

Emergency Medical Service will be available at the track and field on Sunday.
