Surviving Aleppo: An Interview with Nerses Sarkissian
WATERTOWN, Mass. (A.W.)—As the Syrian Civil War approaches its five-year mark, the historic Armenian community of Syria continues to be caught in the ongoing conflict. Yet, Armenians have found a way to continue their everyday life in Syria—with minor adjustments, of course. “We weren’t the cause of this war, but unfortunately we are caught in the crossfire,” said Dr. Nerses Sarkissian, only three days after getting to the United States from the war-stricken country.

Very touchy, impressive and expressive interview. Yes, we never should give up so easily. We have to be ready all the times to defend ourselves and the Armenian government should think about this vital issue by communicating with the Syrian authorities. We have to think even further, we have to be armed heavily because the situation can be transfer to Lebanon. As a nation we have to think wisely, and prevent any drastic changes that can harm us.
This was a strong piece. before I thought all Syrian-Armenians might as well immigrate to Armenia, but now, I see that it is important to maintain an Armenian presence in Syria and not give up.
Lots of admiration for the Syrian-Armenians who are determined to stay in Syria. May God be with you and protect you. As for the ones emigrating to cities like Toronto and Montreal, take solace in knowing that they will strengthen the Armenian communities there. All is not lost.
It is very sad what the Armenian community is going through in Syria “particularly in Aleppo”. I hope this conflict will end soon and all Armenians in Syria will feel safe again to build and progress -as they always did throughout history- and may God protect all Armenians living in Syria.
We all pray that the conflict end as soon as possible, and that those countries who are callously stirring up the conflict while paying lip-service to peace efforts will cease their treachery and evil deceit. Enough! The Armenians have suffered perhaps more than any people in the world, while the world looked on–as it is still doing even nowadays. The Armenians of Aleppo and the whole of Syria will rise again with the country and reestablish themselves the respectable and hardworking and peace-loving people they have always been.
