Letter to the Editor: Civil Disobedience is a Right, Which Belongs to the People
In a recent op-ed titled “Are We Overdoing Civil Disobedience?” Armenian Weekly columnist Raffi Elliott makes several questionable statements. The article, which was shared to social media by Lydian Armenia, was interpreted as a vote of confidence for the mining project, so it is important that its discrepancies are publicly refuted.
The first point I’d like to raise is Elliott’s misattribution of the company. Lydian International is not a “Canadian energy company” like he states

Agree with all the points the author is making. The only thing I would add to this is that being a country under a constant threat form closest neighbor we can not possibly afford to create such huge reservoir of poisonous substances in the heart of wine making, fruit growing and mineral water rich region and hope that the mine’s water treatment facilities will withstand a missile attack, unless the mining company will make its operation missile–proof, which is highly doubtful.
The Armenian Ecological Front is Civil Initiative, not NGO
Since this is a Canadian company, adopt Canadian type regulations for mining. Civil disobedience to all projects is idiotic. Armenia can not survive on an exclusively agrarian economy.
Armenian Environmental Front is not an NGO, it is only a civil initiative :)
Thanks for the piece
Here is a task for the editors of this website: does Raffi Elliot have any direct or indirect affiliation with Lydian? Among the many shareholders, does he or his influential family have any stake? How is it possible to navigate among the great number of stock agents and fund managers that prevent from seeing who exactly is the beneficiary shareholder in order to complete this task? Unless these questions are asked, this issue cannot be discussed in such a simplistic manner.
The editors may also find a great number of publications by Lydian where they claim to be a US-based company, a UK-based company or a Canada-based company. All is correct, they have subsidiaries all over, and where expedient they use whatever origin they like. The fact remains, the mother company’s beneficiary ownership is unknown as it is registered in the offshore tax zone in the UK.
This is openly disastrous action against all country of Armenia.
It has the illegal intention of money making against the will all nation which has obvious criminal nature.
Number one. aspect is Armen Sarkissian which sadly appears to be president of Armenia.
Very bad news to Armenia.
If Lydian company faking themselves and misleading worldwide there actions need legal attention.
Armenian people should get read of them as soon as possible.
