Tankian to Join Diasporan Armenian Artists Monitoring Armenia’s Upcoming Elections

YEREVAN (A.W.)—Armenian-American singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, poet, political activist, and System of a Down front man Serj Tankian said on Dec. 5 that he will be joining other prominent Diasporan Armenian artists, who will be monitoring Armenia’s upcoming parliamentary elections in April.

In a discussion organized by the Media Center—a platform committed to bridging civil society and media in Armenia—Tankian announced that he will be joining Canadian-Armenian actress Arsinee Khanjian, her husband filmmaker Atom Egoyan, and filmmaker Eric Nazarian as a part of the “Justice Within Armenia” campaign.

The campaign, which plans to send 20 observers to monitor the elections, was launched in late September with a online petition signed by several Diasporan Armenian artists and activists. They called on Armenia’s government to end widespread corruption, respect laws and hold democratic elections.

“We, as Armenians, residing in Armenia and throughout the diaspora, are collectively committed to immediate change and justice in Armenia. In the wake of yearly protests and recent upheavals during the spring and summer of 2016 that resulted in gross violations of human and civic rights,” read a part of the petition.

  1. What these individuals ought to do is go to the LOC in Artsakh first and visit with the young Armenian troops. In Artsakh. Pictures of these highly recognizable individuals next to Armenian young soldiers guarding historic Armenian lands will do more for Armenia and Artsakh then their “monitoring”.

  2. I think democracy cant be ignored, without democracy Armenia will become weaker and weaker and that is going to be the biggest danger to Armenia and Artsakh
