Two Armenian Teens Become World Chess Champions

KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia (A.W.)—Two Armenian teenagers, Manuel Petrosyan (U16) and Haik Martirosyan (U18), became world chess champions in their age groups, at the World Youth U14, U16, U18 Chess Championships, which took place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia on Sept. 20-Oct. 4.

Martirosyan won his first seven matches and drew in his last four, which was enough for him to claim the championship. Petrosyan, who competed in the U18 (under 18-years-old) tournament, claimed nine points out of a possible eleven for the championship.

The pairs’ victories made Armenia the only country in the tournament to win two championships in two categories.
