A Note from the AYF Olympics Governing Body

The Governing Body would like to address the issue of not being able to report team scoring during the Olympics on Sunday, and some inaccuracies that occurred with finishing times and places.

tv10_Z10This year the AYF purchased a new state-of-the-art scoring software system generally used in many track competitions. One of the benefits of this system is that it could be integrated with the electronic timing system used by the officials hired by the local chapter. We performed a successful trial of the system before the Olympics, and it also worked well during the swimming competition on Friday.

On Sunday, the officials had the same software loaded on their own laptops and decided to do all of the data entry on their laptops. Several data entry errors were made and, in a few cases, the electronic timing system gave results that did not match what was clearly observed (order of finishers, times, etc.).

By way of example, a very inaccurate time (21.4 seconds) was reported for one heat of the men’s pentathlon 200, and it was attributed to the wrong competitor. Fortunately, we were able to work with the athletes and the coaches to determine the accurate results. Additionally, since the officials had all the results on their computers, we did not have access to the overall scoring until the end of the day. These problems left us unable to announce the team standings during the track meet. Finally, the officials did not provide the proper thumb drive for us to automatically tabulate the results, so we had to manually compile the scores in the hotel on Sunday night.

Unfortunately, we made an error in the manual compilation which resulted in New Jersey being announced in fourth place and Worcester in fifth place, when they actually tied for fourth place. We want to apologize to the Worcester Chapter for this error. In addition, we did not get results from the officials to let us know that Melanee Melkonian from Worcester had tied the record for the 50-meter dash. We also want to apologize to Melanee for not having that announced on Sunday night.

Attention Bill Gates and Steve Jobs-for all the good your inventions have provided in the fields such as medicine and engineering etc., how is it that Sonny Gavoor’s stopwatch is more accurate and reliable than your state-of-the-art scoring software? If I was an A.Y.F. adviser, I would recommend all students go into the fields of neck surgery and thumb transplant surgery. In another two generations, the human race will mutate into a species walking around with faces permanently facing the ground and big toes transplanted as thumbs because the original appendage was worn out from 24-hour texting.
