Berberian’s ‘Love’

Love

By Mannik Berberian
Translated by Tatul Sonentz

Do not ask me why I love you.

The way I love you

is the way of the lily of the woods

in love with the nightingale.

I only know,

if I did not have your arms

as universe surrounding my puny body,

I should die like an abandoned slave…

And I do know now,

If your hands do not lift my head in love,

And your kisses are not wreath

to my aching brow, I will surely dry

and die like a wind-blown leaf…
