Film to air at 8 pm on PBS affiliate WMHT in New York on June 6
NEW YORK—On Thurs., May 16, the Armenian National Committee (ANC) of New York and the AGBU Young Professionals of Greater New York co-sponsored a screening of “Orphans of the Genocide,” the ANCA Eastern Region reported. The film, created by four-time regional Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Bared Maronian, was shown at the AGBU New York headquarters at 55 East 59th Street in New York. It will be aired at 8 p.m. on PBS affiliate WMHT (www.wmht.org) in New York on June 6.
“The ANC of New York is pleased to work with Mr. Maronian to spread awareness of this significant film,” said ANC-NY co-chair Arousiag Markarian. “The documentary tells an important story in the history of the Armenian people, and we are happy to showcase the work of Mr. Maronian, a longtime active community member in Florida.”
“Orphans” is a documentary that takes the viewer through archival footage and the discovered memoirs of orphans who lived through the 20th century’s first fully documented genocide. It profiles orphans while unveiling many orphanages where Armenians were housed in the Middle East.
The film also explores the American Near East Relief Foundation in saving, feeding, and sheltering more than 150,000 documented Armenian Genocide orphans between 1919 and 1926.
Maronian was interviewed by Voice of Armenians TV, and the segment is set to be broadcast in the coming weeks.
Admission was free and refreshments were provided following the film.
Local ANCA committees are encouraged to reach out to their local PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) station to urge them to screen “Orphans.” The film has already been screened on affiliate ValleyPBS, Station KPVT 18 in Fresno, Calif. The movie covered a very important segment of the Genocide yet there is an ommition that must be mentioned i.e that Talaat Pasha not only gave the order to deport but also gave parallel order through his party to make sure that no Armenian remained alive on the deportation.
