STEPANAKERT, NKR—On May 9, an impressive military parade marked the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Shushi. Around 2,000 troops took part in the event, which took place in central Stepanakert. Tanks, aircrafts, rockets, long-range missiles, and anti-aircraft systems were also featured. Karabakh President Bako Sahakian, Armenian President Serge Sarkisian, and Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II were present at the parade, as well as thousands of people who lined the sidewalks and greeted the troops with the flags of Karabakh. Arevik Danielian, a 21 year old talented photographer who was born and raised in Stepanakert, captured some scenes from the parade, and shared them with the Armenian Weekly. Below are her photographs.

  1. Imagine how long its been since Armenia had a formal military and potent armament. Its the only guarantee of its security and its very survival and should be strengthened at every turn.. For centuries Armenians were defenseless and at the whim of the oppressing yoke of the Ottoman occupiers…Looking at these pictures makes me proud.

Also every Armenian youth from around the world should be able to serve in the military. It would do nothing but good for Armenia..

  2. Today we should all be proud the Armenian forces! Nevertheless we also should get rid of the many irregularities and crimes done by some drunk commanders and the cover ups that follow these incidents. Unfortunately these events do not inspire today’s youth to join the army.
