Soccer: Armenia Defeats Macedonia 4-1

Marcos Pizzelli celebrates giving Armenia the lead in Yerevan.

YEREVAN (A.W.)—Armenia defeated the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) 4-1 in Yerevan today, moving a step closer to qualifying for Euro 2012. The Armenian soccer team came to the match knowing they would finish at least second in Group B if they could win today and against the Republic of Ireland on Oct. 11.

Playing at the Yerevan Republican Stadium named after Vazken Sargsyan, Armenia took the lead in the first half after a goal by Pizzelli in the 28th minute. Six minutes later, Mkhitaryan scored a second goal, ending the first half with a 2-0 score.

Armenia continued pressing in the second half. G. Ghazarian scored Armenia’s third goal in the 69th minute, and euphoria swept the thousands gathered at the stadium—including President Serge Sarkisian.

In the 86th minute, Sikov scored FYROM’s only goal.

In the 91st minute, Sarkisov scored a fourth goal for Armenia.

FYROM and Armenia drew 2-2 when they met last year.

  1. Referring to the Republic of Macedonia as FYROM is as denialist and insulting as referring to the Armenian Genocide as not a genocide!
Please revise the language in your article. Thank you.
Congratulations Armenia on the well-deserved victory!

  2. Dear Vlatko,
Thank you for correction; that was just sheer lack of knowledge on our (at least my) side with no intention to insult Macedonians.
I used that here and there in emails and FaceBook, but although Turkish Prime minister Erdogan promised some “PARA” if your team wins ; I assure you that I personally didn’t use that knowingly.
Yesterday I was searching to find exact time of the today’s game and “That” was all over the place, not knowing what it really means; thinking it is officially part of the name I used it , later somewhere else I found the meaning and at a glance saw Former Yugoslavia… part of it and I skipped the rest, but honestly I couldn’t imagine that it could be a derogatory slang against
    Macedonians.

  3. Yes Osik Jan, all little puppet so called “Christian countries” such as Georgia, Macedonia, and even Bulgaria are under influence of Rajab Erdogan’s propaganda machine, their immediate goal is to distort, misinform, lie, and and manipulate their own people about Armenian genocide in favor of their former Ottoman rulers, for some  economic pay back!! I wonder how many corrupted nations in this crazy world of today make “blood money” out of Armenian Genocide, like false republic of Macedonia!!
    Go    Armenia    Go…….

  4. Is there any article on this website under which there is no comment which is related to Turkey in this or that way? How pathetic some of you guys are here! Accusing Turkey of bribing Macedonian players is one of the most stupid things that I ever heard in my life (and it is very insulting against Macedonians too since you imply that they can be buy-able) . We are not even in the same group and most of the Turkish people even don’t know or follow what the Armenian national team has been doing recently – only the top teams like Spain and England attract people’s attention in Turkey as in every other country in Europe – who cares about Armenia or Bosnia or Hungary unless you play against them (and why should we care?) If you are a die-hard football fan maybe you keep yourself updated but for the rest of the public these games don’t mean anything. As a football fan I am happy that your national team has done so far since I know what that feeling of achieving something for a first time in the international stage is, and I can easily tell you too that Aronian is one of my favorite chess players but it looks like some of you guys have a long way to go to overcome the complexness that you apparently bear against the Turkish nation. Good luck against Ireland! Maybe Erdogan promised their players PARA too though, right? How funny you are!

    • Mike, Your lack of knowledge is not my fault the following article plus numerous others are all over the place and I was referring to it; so I didn’t make my comment out of nowhere; I’m sorry for you that by making unintelligent comments you are embarrassing just yourself and no one else.
I didn’t fabricate that and as you see in the below link that subject was bought up in an interview with Macedonia’s coach before the game.

BTW if you checked the above link you saw Erdogan didn’t make that offer at players/coach level he expressed his anti-Armenian sentiments in his meeting with high level Macedonian officials.

  5. Success in a well liked sport can do wonders to a nation’s spirit and it can also reverse the corrosive effects of anti-state propaganda practically overnight. Armenia can do with a few more of these types of sporting successes to boost its morale after years of doom and gloom.

    PS: Macedonia is Macedonian!
