Der-Hovanessian: April 24th Poem for Gomidas

WHEN THE MUSIC STOPPED
By Diana Der-Hovanessian

When he was left for dead,
when he awoke and saw
the slaughter, the cut-off heads,
the crucified young girls
and his modest students raped
he never spoke again.
For twenty silent years
he only stared, past tears,
past outrage, stunned,
never to sing again,
staring into the dark time
when music came undone.
