Hakob Karapents Scholarship Fund

In the final days of his life, Hakob Karapents expressed his wish to establish a scholarship fund in Armenia under the auspices of the Hamazkayin Cultural and Educational Society to support young and promising Armenian students.

Honoring the wishes of her late husband, Alice Karapetian established a scholarship fund in his memory shortly after his death from the contributions made in lieu of flowers at the writer’s funeral and other donations.

The purpose of the fund is to encourage promising young creative minds in Armenia majoring in literature, journalism, and dramatic arts. Managed and overseen by its directors in the United States in cooperation with the board of directors of the executive board of the Hamazkayin-Armenia since its inception, the fund coordinates its activities and selection process with the deans and corresponding faculty chairs of the Yerevan State University, the National Academy of Sciences, the Manuk Abeghian Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, the Khachatur Abovyan State Pedagogical University, and the Yerevan State Theater and Film Institute.

The final candidates are selected from a pool of nominees. The names of the finalists are announced and scholarships are disbursed in Yerevan in a special public ceremony organized by Hamazkayin-Armenia. The amount of the scholarship ranges from $200-$300.

Below is a complete list of over 50 recipients: writers, poets, journalist, actors, and linguists of the Fund for the last decade (2000-10) presented to the public for the first time on the occasion of the 85th birth anniversary of the writer.

To further the noble cause initiated by Karapents, the fund welcomes support by community members and organizations. Contributions, tax-deductible, may be sent to the Amaras Art Alliance under the Hakob Karapents Scholarship Fund to P. O. Box 733 Watertown, MA 02471-0733.

For more details and information, contact Dr. Ara Ghazarians, curator of the Armenian Cultural Foundation, at (781) 646-3090 or Arax Badalian, chair of the Amaras Art Alliance, at (617) 733-7162.

The Hakob Karapents Scholarship Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank our friends and colleagues in the Hamazkayin-Armenia for their sponsorship of the Hakob Karapents Scholarship, academic institutions for their support, and all the donors through whose generosity Hakob Karapents’ dream became a reality.

  1. Though I only met  Hakob Karabentz  only a few times,I had long correspondence with him while I lived in Europe. When he passed away  I was so affected that  I could not either go to his burial  as by then I lived  in N.J. and pronounce a discourse  upholding his very good qualities and as a stout  defender  of our Cause/rights,not even write an article in the press. Instead, I decided i would include some of our correspondence in my my book.In 2005  it was published in Yerevan, under title “Viewpoints ,articles and memoirs of a Free lance patriot”  in which quite a few  appears  there/nex time in yerevan, I shall see to it that a sculpturer would make his at least half bust to be at an appropriate  sight near YSU  or  a schoold that  is named  after  him.
May his soul  rest in peace.Pity he did  not live  just a few  years  more  to see his beloved Hayastan’s slow but continued progress towards a firm STATE.
    Your friend,Hama Haigagani SIRO always,
    G.P.
