In “Colors of Liberty,” the artist expresses his love and gratitude to America, his adopted country. Thirty years ago, Varoujan came to the United States from Soviet Armenia, to seek the freedom to express himself as an artist, and here he has raised a family. In the last two decades he has been a resident of Chelmsford.

“Colors of Liberty” is a project of Peace of Art, Inc., a non-profit educational organization created and founded by Varoujan that uses art to bring awareness to the human condition. Varoujan believes in the power of giving and he has used his art to give back to the community. On April 23, he was honored at the Massachusetts State House and received the Senate and House of Representatives resolutions for his lifelong efforts to promote peace through his works of art.

Varoujan believes that America’s power resides in its love for humanity, and the desire to help those in need is embedded in the psych of this nation. The artist explains, “In this collection, I would like to convey the message that America’s power is not determined by its military superiority, but by its unconditional power of love for humanity. America’s helping hands have been extended throughout the world to new developing countries and countries which existed long before the founding of America. The blood of Americans has been shed attempting to bring peace and stability among nations.”

“America is a country of immigrants, where people from different countries, races, and ethnicities, speaking different languages, live together in peace, because they are connected with each other, with the power of love for their new country,” he says.

“Colors of Liberty” was first exhibited in September 2009 at the Massachusetts State House. On Sept. 11, 2009, State Representative Peter Koutoujian and Varoujan unveiled “The Missing Stripes,” a painting he dedicated to the victims of September 11, 2001. “The Missing Stripes” will be exhibited at the Chelmsford Public Library as part of the collection.
