Rep. Schiff to Host Capitol Hill Premiere of ‘AGHET’

Ground-Breaking Film Spotlights the International Impact of Turkey’s Genocide Denial

“AGHET: A GENOCIDE,” is a powerful documentary by German filmmaker Eric Friedler, calling attention to the current-day Turkish government's international campaign of genocide denial.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—On Wed., July 21, U.S. House Armenian Genocide Resolution author Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) will host the Capitol Hill premiere of “AGHET: A GENOCIDE,” a powerful documentary by German filmmaker Eric Friedler, documenting the annihilation of 1.5 million Armenians from 1915-23 and calling attention to the current-day Turkish government’s international campaign of genocide denial, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

The 90-minute documentary, dubbed in English, will be shown on July 21 from 6-9 p.m. in Room 2325 of the Rayburn House Office Building Room, adjacent to the U.S. Capitol.

“I am honored to host the screening of ‘AGHET’ in order to help educate my colleagues and their staffs about the first genocide of the 20th century,” explained Schiff. “In the fight for recognition, we are armed only with the truth. But in the end, the truth will be victorious.”

A pre-screening reception and the actual screening will be followed by a panel discussion, sponsored by the ANCA, featuring AGHET director Eric Friedler; former U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Evans; “Screamers” director Carla Garapedian; and Vartkes Yeghiayan, the director of the Center for Armenian Remembrance. The discussion will be moderated by ANCA executive director Aram Hamparian.

“The Capitol Hill premiere of ‘AGHET’ and the panel discussion on this powerful film will provide an opportunity to explore the contemporary consequences of both Turkey’s campaign to cover up the Armenian Genocide, and also the complicity of other nations—the United States, sadly, included—in the denial of this crime,” said Hamparian. “Evans, Friedler, Garapedian, and Yeghiayan, each in their own compelling way, are at the cutting edge of the fight against denial and are leaders in the struggle to end the cycle of genocide. We are tremendously pleased that they will join with Congressman Schiff at this first-time Washington screening and eagerly look forward to the information, insights, and inspiration they will offer.”

“AGHET: A GENOCIDE” debuted on German public television (NDR) in April 2010. Award-winning director Eric Friedler assembles an impeccable cast, who bring to life the original texts of German and U.S. diplomatic dispatches and eyewitness accounts, interspersed with never-before-seen footage of the genocide and its political aftermath. The film, applauded by Nobel laureate Gunter Grass, has sparked debate throughout Europe. It is now being showcased around the world on television and in major film festivals.

  3. I just finished watching the documentary and am very grateful to “Aghet” for providing the link.  It is very commendable of Germans to produce this documentary, which not only tells the Armenian story, but does so in away that openly shows German complicity in the Genocide.  This kind of honest self-appraisal is possible because Germany has admitted to and made reparations for the Holocaust.  German society has engaged in coming to terms with its history and can now look with insight and maturity at the Armenian Genocide.  I admire their courage and believe the same kind of honesty and maturity can come from Turkey once they recognize the Genocide.

  4. Hye, Adam Schiff, thank you, for your efforts to pursue our cause, the Armenian Genocide issue,(Hye Tahd) in the Congress of the United States of America.  When our leadership of our nation is established to speak forthright and  recognize the guilt of the Turkish crimes of Genocides – the violation of the ancient and advanced Armenian peoples, then too, the vital issue of the end to the cycle of Genocides (innocent victims demeaned, violated, and worse) will come to pass.  Despots shall realize – Genocides will not be tolerated the world over!
Humanity shall have spoken – against despots – to end the slaughters, rapes, tortures and worse which despots impose on innocents for their own convoluted goals since, until today, these despots pursue – whomever, wherever, anywhere.. at will, with none to end these horrors demeaning the innocents, those lost to slaughters, too, those who survive with the memories of the horrors never to be forgotten, but certainly passed on to their generations that follow… never, ever, able to forget the methods used against their grandparents and their families – the vilest and most inhumane methods the Turkic minds could devise… such as nailing horse shoes to the soles of the victims feet, burning churches filled with women and children, slicing the pregnant women’s bodies and tossing the unborn on high to land on the swords, and worse.  Man’s inhumanity at it most horrific mentality… and denied to this day, 1890s-2010, unrelenting. Too, there are the unburied bones of those who died in the marches (to nowhere) in the deserts… bones waiting for the recognition of the Turkish Genocide of the Armenian nation… awaiting the resurrection of the fledgling Armenian nation to stand with all the civilized world – worthy of being a outstanding people to join with the civilized nations of the world – again.  Manooshag

  5. Hye, Adam Schiff, I know that in your efforts for the recognition of the Turkish Genocide of the Armenian nation, you are compelled as well to continue too as this is in memory of those of the Jewish faith, millions, lost to your people, lost to Genocide, your Holocaust – unforgettable…  I do feel that all our victims to the mentally deranged who wreaked this havoc upon innocents are able, together,  to know of our efforts to end the cycle of Genocides of innocents by bringing those guilty of these crimes to face justice, too, (followed by reparations for the Armenians…)   The fledgling nation of Armenia has much to offer, much to share with  the civilized world.  Now, nearly twenty (20) years reborn, recovering from the Turkish Genocide, then the 70 years within the repressive communist nation of the USSR, our Armenian citizens have much to overcome… Adam Schiff, your efforts are appreciated by all by many across the world, too, Armenians, in Armenia, and world-wide our Armenian diaspora.  Morally, Armenia has need such as the United States of America to recognize, too, the nation of Armenia as a people worthy of their own nation, a nation constant in sharing of all advances with civilized nations – a nation free of those who still seek Armenia’s ‘elimination’.  Humanity, all who seek to improve the world, rather than nations whose contributions add only to the world’s pain, wars, and worse, Genocides. Again. you must know, your efforts have made a difference, to Armenians, and I know for the world.  I am hopeful will lead the world towards ending the cycle of Genocides.  I am proud to have known of your moral stance; I can imagine the pride of your own family as you seek justice for those whose voices were ‘eliminated’ – ended via planned slaughters, tortures and worse, victims of Genocides…  innocents.  Manooshag
