AIWA Scholarships Now Available with Special Opportunities for Students in Sciences

BOSTON—The Armenian International Women’s Association (AIWA) is now accepting applications for scholarship awards for the 2010-11 academic year. The scholarships are awarded annually to full-time female students of Armenian descent attending accredited colleges or universities. Students entering their junior or senior year in college, as well as graduate students, are eligible to apply for the awards, which are based on financial need and merit.

Students in the fields of Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Technology, Computer Sciences, and Architecture are eligible to receive the Lucy Kasparian Aharonian awards of $2,000 to $6,000 (juniors and seniors) or up to $10,000 (MS and Ph.D. students), granted by AIWA in conjunction with the Society for Women Engineers, Boston Chapter.

Lucy Kasparian Aharonian, an active member of the Society of Women Engineers, enjoyed a long career in software engineering even while raising a family. With degrees in mathematics and business administration, she worked for several major firms in the Boston area and also taught on various levels on a part-time basis. Later she successfully embarked on a second career as a basket artist. The scholarship program was established in 2007 in her memory by the Aharonian family.

Awards in other disciplines

AIWA also offers a number of scholarships for female students in all academic fields, ranging in value from $500 to $2,000. The program was initiated with the Agnes K. Missirian Scholarship, which was established in memory of the professor of management at Bentley College, a strong advocate for women’s rights.

Also available are five Dr. Carolann S. Najarian scholarships, as well as awards in memory of Rose A. Hovannesian and Zarouhi Y. Getsoyan.
