From the Archives: Saroyan Congratulates Weekly
Editor’s note: It is an often-repeated fact that William Saroyan began his writing career with the Hairenik Weekly (later renamed the Armenian Weekly). Even back in 1936, the Weekly had acknowledged him as “our most distinguished literary alumnus.” Below is a Letter to the Editor he wrote as the Hairenik Weekly began its third year of publication. It appeared on the front page of the Feb. 28, 1936 issue of the Weekly.

Through my Father
I saw his face
Recently through through T.V
Translation is important
For others to know our cultures
Our Arts…
Our Soulful Poems
Our pains through centuries
Armenians have five T.V stations
None of them translate to English
This must be done soon…
Because we know our history
The others don’t know
They need to know
Especially many Armenians
Who are married none-Armenians
Their ‘Lucky Behalves
Their children
Are interested to know
Everything about Us
About Artful…Clever…Dedicated Armenians…

Who translates Turkish films to Arabs are Armenian
Her name is S. Kuyemjian
Probably Syrian Armenian, who knows Turkish from her parents and Arabic from School
Recently they removed her name from the new turkish films…
The films made great impact on Arabs… many went for Holiday to Turkey… but at the end they were disappointed because they showed hatred to Arabs…especially those ladies who cover their heads or close their face…
