The fourth to seventh graders were present at the commemoration in the Armenian Home for the Aged in Emerson, after which they presented a program to the residents. In the afternoon, they attended the event held at the Hackensack Court Memorial. Their solemn appearance befitted the occasion. The eighth graders, who were in Armenia during that time, visited the Tsitsernagaberd Genocide Memorial to pay their respects, as so many people did.

Earth Day

April 22 was Earth Day, and Joseph Halajian, an Early Learning Center parent, and Prof. Dork Sahagian, the director of the new environmental initiative at Lehigh

University in Pennsylvania, were invited as special guests. Sahagian has been conducting research in various fields related to climate science. He lectured to the third to seventh graders on climate science and efforts to control global warming. This informative and
insightful talk was followed by interested questions by the students.

Halajian is the Environmental Club advisor at the school and has been instrumental in the creation of the recycling program. A musician, he composed the song “In Your Hand” about environmental issues, which he taught and sang along with the students at the end of his talk.

Environmental Club members Arianna Cruickshank, Arianna Mesrobian, and Lori

Semerciyan (Class of 2012) spoke about the importance of recycling. This sparked a real interest among the students, who later created posters and signs for their classes.

  2. I’m really happy that our work has been recognized! Our next project is to sell canvas bags to kids so they could color them for their parents. We hope we can prosper well.
