Mentors who brought me to the Weekly

Special Issue: 90 — Informing, Connecting, Inspiring The Armenian Weekly, October 2024 I am honored to have been asked to write a piece for the special issue magazine commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Armenian Weekly. Upon getting the ‘assignment’ from editor Pauline Getzoyan, my first thought was to write about my mentors. There are several. I will focus on three: my mother Violet Merian Gavoor, Tom Vartabedian and my great-uncle Rouben. [caption id="attachment_94669" align

  1. Those of us in the Library of Congress have reason to thank Ruben Gavoor for his active participation in the Darian Committee for the Armenian collections from 1948 to 1952. Mr. Gavoor was the secretary and thanks to his wife and Greg Aftandilian, papers are with the Armenian collection. He was a member of the astounding generation after the Genocide, many of whom showed the country what we were. Thanks for this excellent article.
