AYF Announces Non-Profit Status

Eastern Region Incorporated in Massachusetts

WATERTOWN, Mass.—The Armenian Youth Federation (AYF), Youth Organization of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF), Eastern Region USA, Inc. recently announced that it has been approved as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization as an educational charity.

This significant milestone came shortly after the celebration of the organization’s 75th anniversary, which took place in Boston last year.

In 2006, the Central Executive filed for incorporation with the state of Massachusetts, and at the same time, applied with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for 501(c)3 non-profit status. The process was not easy, and took significant legal efforts to complete.  In September 2008, after two years, the AYF-YOARF was formally recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt organization.

The non-profit status will greatly improve many of the organization’s tasks, making it more efficient to operate.

Under U.S. Code 26 U.S.C. § 170, a provision is provided to deduct, for federal income tax proposes, any charitable contributions to the organization.  The Central Executive hopes this will provide incentive for interested parties to donate, especially from large donors looking to reduce their income tax burden while helping a worthy cause.

Company matching programs will match donations made by their employees to non-profit organizations, up to a certain amount.

The AYF is, by necessity, a very dynamic organization.  In its rich history, it has witnessed many developments that have impacted the organization dramatically.  At its 15th anniversary, the AYF established its Junior Chapter organization.  In 1973, at its 40th anniversary, it created the three regions we are familiar with today.  And at its 75th anniversary, it bore witness to a structural milestone that will help protect and preserve the organization’s work and its members.

To make a tax-deductible donation to the AYF Eastern Region, email the Central Executive at ce@ayf.org.
