NAASR Christmas open house to feature talk by visiting AUA scholars

Dr. Hayarpi Papikyan and Dr. Rafik Santrosyan, both of the American University of Armenia, will be the featured speakers during the NAASR holiday open house on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the NAASR Vartan Gregorian Building, 395 Concord Ave., Belmont, Massachusetts.

Papikyan and Santrosyan will present a lecture titled “Yekaterina Bahaturian: A Forgotten Writer and Dramatist from Artsakh.” Their presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be given in-person at NAASR and streamed live on Zoom and on NAASR’s YouTube channel. (Zoom registration link: https://bit.ly/4ex9BYt). This will be both scholars’ first time speaking at NAASR.

The Open House will run from 6:00 p.m. until the conclusion of the evening’s programs. Light refreshments will be offered prior to the 7:30 program. There will be a one-day-only 20% discount for in-store and online sales of all items in the NAASR bookstore. All are welcome to attend both the open house and the lecture.

Papikyan and Santrosyan’s talk will present ongoing research on the life and work of Yekaterina Bahaturian (1870-1944) who grew up in Shushi, then a provincial center of the Russian Empire.  Having subsequently lived in the three major colonial and later Soviet Trans-Caucasian capitals — Yerevan, Tiflis and Baku — Bahaturian established herself as a recognized female writer whose life and career were marked by drastic political and social changes. With a mostly unpublished oeuvre of more than 100 plays, novels, essays and memoirs, Bahaturian created a literary world where women play central roles in exploring themes of identity, gender and power.  Through a glimpse into Bahaturian’s life and work, the talk will reflect on how women writers positioned themselves and their writing within the broader context of social revolutions and wars that shaped the course of the 20th century.

Dr. Papikyan specializes in 19th- and early 20th-century Armenian Studies, history and sociology of schooling and institutionalized education and women’s history. She holds a Ph.D. in history and sociology of education by the Université Paris V — Sorbonne Cité and is attached to the research and scientific center of CERLIS (Centre de recherche sur les liens sociaux) in Paris, France.

Dr. Santrosyan received his Ph.D. in Germanic linguistics from Yerevan State Linguistic University in 2015. He has served as a lecturer at Yerevan State Linguistic University and American University of Armenia, as a visiting professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University and as a postdoctoral fellow at City College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield, Greece. Their visit to Boston is supported by MISTI Global Seed Funds in Armenia.

Admission is free and all are welcome. The NAASR center is located opposite the First Armenian Church and next to the U.S. Post Office. Parking is available around the building and in adjacent areas.
