On January 13, journalist Fin Depencier wrote a lengthy exposé in the San Francisco-based Palladium Magazine, titled: “Ilham Aliyev and the Making of Azerbaijan.”
The article starts with Ilham Aliyev’s early years in Moscow when his father Heydar was a member of the ruling Politburo of the Soviet Union.
At the young age of 16, Ilham “was admitted into Russia’s most prestigious university, the Moscow Institute of International Relations,” through his father’s KGB connections.

In its time the Aliyev clan will have to account to the Azeri people over their family firm governance of Azerbaijan. The petrodollar windfall has bought many shills and reduced censure. The notion of a Israel – Turkey – Georgia – Azerbaijan axis and a rival Syria – Iran – Russia – Armenia axis is partially true although neither are coherent blocs to form opposing alliances. Israel and Turkey have had strains on their relationship, Georgia doesn’t have the same level of animosity to Armenia as Turkey and Azerbaijan do. Russia is quite friendly with Turkey, Azerbaijan and Israel to a level that disappoints Armenia, Syria and Iran among other things. Interesting about Aliyev studying English and British history in Moscow when part of the USSR, in this presumably he and his father knew which way the wind was blowing in the 1980s.
