BUENOS AIRES, Argentina— The Armenian youth of Argentina held a demonstration in front of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Buenos Aires on March 3, to mark the 29th anniversary of the Azerbaijani pogroms that took place against the Armenian population in Sumgait.
The Armenian community showed up in large numbers with a strong presence from the local Homenetmen scouts, reported Prensa Armenia.
“The authoritarian regime of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev spends millions of petrodollars on events and publicity to wash away the image of his corrupt government, while keeping the civilian population in extreme poverty and harassing and persecuting journalism and opposition,” said member of Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) of South America, Breda Kechiyan in her remarks at the demonstration.
When demanding the freedom of Russia-Israeli blogger Alexander Lapshin, Kechiyan explained that Artaskh (Nagorno-Karabagh)—unlike dictatorial nations like Azerbaijan or Turkey that oppress its people—is a country that upholds democracy and elects a government who work to improve the quality of life for its people.
“This is why today we call on the international communities, and above all the Argentine authorities, to recognize the self-determination of the Artsakh Republic as a free and independent state and to condemn denialism in all forms,” she concluded in her remarks.
