AIWA Scholarship Applications Now Available

BOSTON, Mass.—The Armenian International Women’s Association (AIWA) is now accepting applications for scholarship awards for the 2012-13 academic year.

In addition to awards in the humanities and social sciences, generous grants are available to students in the sciences through the Lucy Kasparian Aharonian scholarships, granted by AIWA in conjunction with the Society for Women Engineers Boston Chapter. Students in the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, technology, computer sciences, and architecture are eligible for Aharonian awards of $2,000 to $6,000 (college juniors and seniors) or up to $10,000 (M.S. and Ph.D. students).

AIWA also offers a number of scholarships for female students in all academic fields, ranging in value from$500 to $2,000. The program was initiated with the Agnes K. Missirian Scholarship, established in memory of the professor of management at Bentley College in Waltham, a strong advocate for women’s rights.

Also available for students in all academic fields are Dr. Carolann S. Najarian. Ethel Jafferian Duffett, Rose A. Hovannesian, and Zarouhi Y. Getsoyan scholarships.

AIWA scholarships are awarded annually to full-time female students of Armenian descent attending accredited colleges or universities. Students entering their junior or senior year in college, as well as graduate students, are eligible to apply for the awards, which are based on financial need and merit.

Aharonian Awards

The generous awards in the sciences were initiated in 2007 in memory of the late Lucy Kasparian Aharonian, an active member of the Society of Women Engineers, who enjoyed a long career in software engineering even while raising a family. With degrees in mathematics and business administration, she worked for several major firms in the Boston area and also taught on various levels. Later she successfully embarked on a second career as a basket artist.

Applications for all AIWA scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year are available online or can be requested by mail. The deadline for applications is April 10, 2012. Winners will be announced at the association’s annual meeting in May.
