Garen Mouths Off
Yegparian: Foxman Face to Face
I didn’t expect to ever be that close, but after the Dec. 8 LA World Affairs Council event, at which the infamous DAF (Denier Abraham “Abe” Foxman) of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) spoke, we ended up in the same hotel elevator as I was chasing a parking validation.
DAF asked how I was, to which I replied I’d have been much better if his answers had been different, i.e. expressing a willingness to change. Another gentleman in the elevator said that I had to admit he answered my question(s) well. My retort: The response was disingenuous.

Excellent job, Garen!
Foxman sticks his foot in his mouth every time. He can’t seem to resist.
Just to be sure we all understand: the national ADL’s statement of Aug. 21, 2007 (the last “official” word on the subject) was actually a denial of the Armenian genocide because it implied that the murders of Armenians during the genocide was NOT intentional and thus could not fit the definition of genocide in the 1948 UN Genocide Treaty, which specifically requires INTENT by the perpetrator.
Foxman wrote: “We have never negated but have always described the painful events of 1915-1918 perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire against the Armenians as massacres and atrocities . . . the consequences of those actions were indeed tantamount to genocide.”
As proof that everyone understood that this was really genocide DENIAL: After Foxman issued his statement, cities in Massachusetts, as well as the MMA (Massachusetts Municipal Association), which includes every municipality in the state as a member, continued to sever ties with the ADL’s so-called No Place for Hate program. More than a dozen cities have severed ties down to today.
The ongoing record by Armenian Americans and other human rights activists is at http://www.NoPlaceForDenial.com.
Your fine article, Garen, deserves to be there.
The battle goes on.
Thank you, Mr. Yeghparian, for having the courage to confront Foxman and expose his lobbying organizations’ hypocrisy, and for keeping us informed. The fact that the ADL permits him to stay in power means that they must tacitly approve of what he is doing. The ADL still has not forthrightly acknowledged the Genocide, and continues to lobby against the passage of the Genocide resolution. Armenian groups and individuals should continue to “out” Foxman and his organization.
This is the best article I’ve read about Foxman. The man is taking down the ADL, destroying its credibility. His response to Sarah Palin co-opting the term “blood libel” was ridiculously sympathetic. He equivocated about that the way he equivocates about the Armenian genocide. Somewhere along the line, the man lost his sense of morality.
I think most Jews have an affinity for Armenians. Both our peoples have had our existence threatened throughout our history, even before the 20th century. At least Germany has fessed up. Foxman doesn’t represent me or any other educated Jew. Foxman represents Foxman.
Thanks for the article. Beautifully written.
