FRESNO, Calif.—Dr. Bedross Der Matossian and Dr. Levon Marashlian will be guest speakers at a special Armenian Genocide commemorative event at 7:30 p.m. on Fri., April 16, in the University Business Center, Room 191, Alice Peters Auditorium, on the Fresno State campus. The Armenian Studies Program and Armenian Students Organization at Fresno State are sponsoring the presentations.
Der Matossian, a lecturer in history at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will speak on “The Taboo within the Taboo: The Fate of the ‘Armenian Capital’ in the End of the Ottoman Empire.” One of the marginalized topics in the historiography of the Ottoman Empire in general and that of the Armenian Genocide in particular is the fate of the “Armenian economy” during World War I. Der Matossian examines the fate of “Armenian capital” in the empire.
Der Matossian is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he began his graduate studies in the department of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies. He completed his Ph.D. in Middle East history in the department of Middle East and Asian languages and cultures at Columbia University in 2008.
Marashlian, a professor of history at Glendale Community College, will speak on “Problems with Denial and Denying with the Armenian-Turkish Protocols.” The interrelationship between Turkey’s problems with denying the Armenian Genocide and Turkey’s motivations for negotiating the Armenian-Turkish protocols is the focus of this lecture. Marashlian teaches Armenian history and diasporan current affairs, as well as courses on Middle Eastern, Russian, and United States history and politics. He has lectured extensively in the United States and Armenia on a variety of topics related to the courses he teaches.
