BURBANK, Calif.—The National Organization for Women (NOW), San Fernando Valley Chapter on Jan. 29 endorsed Garen Yegparian for Burbank City Council, citing his leadership and vision for ensuring equality for all residents and his pledge to reach out to all Burbankers to encourage involvement in the City’s civic life.
“I am proud to be the only candidate in this election to receive the support of the National Organization for Women,” said Yegparian upon receiving the endorsement. “NOW has been at the forefront of ensuring equality for women across the country, and I am honored to have its membership’s support.”
“Our endorsement of Garen speaks volumes about who he is, his record, and what he stands for,” said Jan Tucker, co-president of the SFV/NELA NOW, which covers the San Fernando Valley and northeast Los Angeles. “It is well-acknowledged throughout political circles in Los Angeles—and even throughout California—that our endorsement is one of the hardest ones to get. Unlike other PACs that utilize a questionnaire that is 99 percent multiple choice, and for which the scoring is both objective and easily figured out by political consultants, our questionnaire requires subjective and substantive written answers from candidates before they even get an interview,” Tucker added.
“For a candidate like Garen Yegparian to meet our criteria is about as difficult as running a marathon, but I can unequivocally say that he passed our muster with flying colors and his support from our committee was unanimous,” Tucker concluded.
NOW joins the growing list of individuals and organizations lending their support to Yegparian’s campaign for Burbank City Council. The broad-based support includes Democrats, Republicans, and Independent voters, as well as organizations throughout the city.
Organizations such as the Sierra Club and the Burbank Democratic Club endorsed Yegparian because of his commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents, while Burbank’s assemblyman, Paul Krekorian, and the president of the Burbank Board of Education, Larry Applebaum, support Yegparian because of his leadership and call for increased financial accountability to weather the current economic crisis.
“I believe strong schools are the foundation of a vibrant community. That is why I’m supporting Garen Yegparian for Burbank City Council,” said Larry Applebaum during a recent message to voters. “Garen has the experience and vision to help improve our quality of life in Burbank, while maintaining accountability at City Hall.”
