The Hamazkayin USA Eastern Regional Executive announces the launch of the “Kidag” Western Armenian youth program.
The “Kidag” program presents age-appropriate subjects, normally taught in schools, in concise Western Armenian instead of in the diasporan language. Through 20 videos for each age group, the student encounters historical figures and learns vocabulary pertaining to sports, nature, continents, oceans, animals and more. The goal is to make the Armenian language a constant part of the student’s life.
Hamazkayin is aware of the steady decline in the use of Western Armenian, particularly among Armenian communities living in Europe and the Americas. The vocabulary used and learned often does not provide opportunities for in-depth conversation. Consequently, these conversations shift to the diasporan language — in our case, English. With these videos, students will be introduced to a wide range of Armenian vocabulary, which will support the development of their language skills and enhance their confidence in Armenian language utilization beyond basic superficial conversations.
Educators can use the videos to complement or enhance the classroom experience. Children can also watch them at home for entertainment.
The Hamazkayin Eastern Regional Executive is happy to announce that this year, the first set of videos of the “Kidag” program have been produced for ages 10-12. Videos directed at ages 7-9, 13-15 and 16-19 will follow in subsequent years.
These videos will also form an integral part of the soon to be released Who is the Kidag game. Through this game, participants will watch the videos and answer questions in an enjoyable social atmosphere. They will listen to Armenian, enrich their vocabulary and knowledge and make new friends.
