Chicago hosts Hamazkayin 95th anniversary celebration

The Hamazkayin Eastern Region USA celebrated the organization’s 95th anniversary on Saturday, December 2, 2023. The event was hosted by the Hamazkayin Chicago Chapter at the Armenian Community Center in Glenview, Illinois. 

The evening began with opening remarks by Chicago Hamazkayin chairperson Armine Papazian. Papazian touched upon the struggles and the successes of Hamazkayin over the past 95 years. Kari Ghezerian, vice-chair of the Hamazkayin Eastern Region USA, relayed the organization’s message and stated that since 1928, Hamazkayin’s primary work has been to protect the culture and the Armenian language in the diaspora.

The evening’s main entertainment was Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Serouj Kradjian, along with a performance by the Chicago Hamazkayin Sardarabad Dance Ensemble. Kradjian entertained the hundreds in attendance, including representatives of Eastern Region Chapter executives, with his sensational music of tango, Armenian “Ashoughagan” music of Sayat Nova and Armenian patriotic music such as “Zartir Lao,” which was met with a standing ovation.

The memorable evening concluded with prayers by Very Rev. Fr. Boghos Tinkjian, pastor of All Saints Church in Glenview.

The Eastern USA region of Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society, consisting of nine chapters, constitutes one of the branches of the worldwide Hamazkayin family, founded in 1928.
