‘Aleppo’s Liberation Put an End to the Many Nightmares of the Armenian Community,” Says Kantsasar Editor
Aleppo, Syria (A.W.) –Opposition groups agreed to a ceasefire in Syria on Dec. 13, effectively turning control of Aleppo to the Syrian government. According to several news outlets, the ceasefire deal was reached after the Syrian Army gained near complete control of Aleppo on Dec. 12.
Shortly after the news of the government control of the city broke, editor-in-chief of Aleppo-based Armenian news outlet Kantsasar Zarmig Boghigian said that it is important to note that the war is not yet over. “Aleppo’s liberation put an end to the many nightmares of the Armenian community, including the fear of losing relatives and everyday shelling,” wrote Boghigian in a Facebook post, adding, “Aleppo has been liberated, but the province still has not.”
The editor explained that while the recent developments provide the Armenian community with hope, reconstruction of the city has not begun and the community still lacks basic services such as electricity. “While we are enthusiastic with the recent developments, we must remain realistic in order not to confuse people,” Boghigian wrote.
In a separate Facebook post a day earlier, Boghigian said that safety is the community’s priority, for which there are no guarantees.
Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin confirmed the Syrian government’s control of eastern Aleppo on Dec. 13.
